What Emotional Abuse
Really Sounds Like

It's important that we confront the reality of abuse to understand it. These examples are intended to provide a realistic perspective on how verbal and emotional abuse can look, sound or feel. Yet these represent only one person's experience and only a few incidents. The impact of emotional abuse or coercive control is its CONSTANCY over time.

Every situation is unique but
violence can be characterized as abusive whenever a person feels consistently threatened in their own home, when there is a pattern of ongoing and intentional disruption to his or her sense of well-being.

Violence is an emotional act.  It does not involve rational consideration of the consequences.

Laws and punishments won't stop violence.

Peaceful means of solving conflicts must be taught early and reinforced in the community

and Victims need the support of people who understand.
